6. Virtual Economy pt1

Why this solution?

The game now had a training mode and a main event mode taking place on a specific day to see who is the strongest.

Players would find no reason to train, unless they used it to solve the problem of getting their daily pushups in for the day (some users, but not many). But, I wanted to motivate users to train everyday so they could participate in the main event.

We wanted to produce better competitors so players feel like they are growing so they would continue playing the game to increase their pushup ability and test their strength.

To address this challenge, I tied training and king of the hill main event together. Players would need to train to earn enough points (pho bowl crypto tokens), which could be traded in for a main event invite token. This invite could be submitted to access the main event.

The main event winner would win a small cash reward.

User pains & gains addressed

  • Use the app everyday

  • every player performs quality pushup form

  • More competitors to avoid the disappointment of no-shows

  • Competitive, but re-focused on your own ability to increase your pushup rep count match to match

  • Convenient to workout

  • Simple movement

  • I can judge the movement is done correctly

  • Quick workout

  • Catalyst to get started working out

  • Test your strength ability

  • working out is boring

  • I'm not motivated to do this myself

  • I don't know fitness routine I should do

  • I need a workout for the day

Learnings

  • Players would train, earn tokens, and then play in the main event.

  • Players who earned pho tokens coveted their tokens because they were hard earned.

  • Other players would attrite very quickly during the training phase and never make it to the main event.

  • If people knew a few people going to the main event, it would motivate them to participate, but afterwards, these players were not motivated to continue training for the next main event.

  • Training itself can become very boring since the concept is very simple. It does not employ enough principles of a good game for them to come back and play again.
