5. App: Training

Why this solution?

Players forms would range from good, incorrect, to poor so training was necessary to show them the right form. I initially tried videos, but it was not sufficient to produce quality reps.

Also, I needed players to interact with the game more frequently so they can build a habit. Otherwise, they would forget the app existed and miss the King of the Hill main event.

The next solution added a training mode using computer vision to track the number of reps a player performed. It requires players to perform quality repetitions.

User pains & gains addressed

  • New: every player performs quality pushup form

  • New: build a habit to play the game everyday

  • More competitors to avoid the disappointment of no-shows

  • Competitive, but re-focused on your own ability to increase your pushup rep count match to match

  • Convenient to workout

  • Simple movement

  • I can judge the movement is done correctly

  • Quick workout

  • Catalyst to get started working out

  • Test your strength ability

  • working out is boring

  • I'm not motivated to do this myself

  • I don't know fitness routine I should do

  • I need a workout for the day

Learnings

The pushup rep counter is an early prototype so we assumed it would have issues, but we would learn enough from it.

  • It took players a few attempts to get the computer vision to count their reps. Once they understood what it wanted from them, they were able to perform pushups correctly in training mode

  • When players played in the main event, about half the players would forget their training and perform poor pushup form in order to try to win.

  • Only players who enjoyed grinding day to day, would continue using the app to train. They were unmotivated to continue moving forward to do the same thing everyday. But some players used the app to get their daily pushups in, everyday.
