4. App: King of the Hill

Why this solution?

Players would not show up to the head to head async matches, and I heard the following excuses:

  • I didn't have time for a 60 second pushup challenge

  • I forgot to show up as a challenger

  • I'm afraid of competition in this head to head manner

The next solution was an open ended match that is open for a 24 to 48 hour period with a leaderboard. This wouldn't require an initiator since this is an open challenge taking place on a specific day.

The players would perform max pushup reps in 60 seconds, record that video and submit it. At the end of the challenge period, all videos would be judged by humans. Then a leaderboard was displayed by # of reps completed in 60 seconds.

User pains & gains addressed

  • New: Increase the range of time you can submit your pushup challenge

  • New: remind me when the event is taking place

  • More competitors to avoid the disappointment of no-shows

  • Competitive, but re-focused on your own ability to increase your pushup rep count match to match

  • Convenient to workout

  • Simple movement

  • I can judge the movement is done correctly

  • Quick workout

  • Catalyst to get started working out

  • Test your strength ability

  • working out is boring

  • I'm not motivated to do this myself

  • I don't know fitness routine I should do

  • I need a workout for the day

Learnings

  • Pushup form varied from poor to good, to incorrect, so it's always in question who actually won.

  • When pushups were judged, players questioned the judging

  • The time elapsed between competitions would break a user's habit to use the game for pushups.
