Problem and User Research summary
What is the problem?
Members are seeking to get their sweat on while building strength or endurance by setting measured goals
What are the benefits to solving this problem?
Guarantee: build your endurance, strength or cardiovascular systems based on the class types you take
Guarantee: riders will know exactly how hard they need to push to build strength or endurance.
New: a novel cycling experience where the difficulty to based on your current fitness abilities
Convenient: to develop your endurance, strength, etc, the rider doesn't need to think. They just show up and ride, and the science will work it out for them.
Convenient: Balance their group fitness classes with a strength building class.
Effort: easy to see gains ride to ride, due to the metrics produced by the end of the rid
Speed: the workout ranges from 30 to 45 minutes
Identity: professional cyclists (ex. Tour De France) train with this method, so users will start to understand the language and build an identity around cycling.
What constraints do we have when solving this problem?
Each cycling class is limited to 40 riders
Classes fill it up fast
Who has the problem?
Members who rode the Pursuit, but quit after 1 day due to the intense competition against others
People trying to build strength, but do not want to lift weights
Weight lifters who need to build their cardiovascular system and endurance using scientific methods
How painful is the problem?
In a regular cycling class, it is a pure grind without measurement tools to know if you are 'doing it right'.
In regular cycling class, every ride is difficult with no gauge of progress.
In Pursuit, the experience is highly competitive against other riders, which leaves a majority of the riders feeling bad about their placement (not top 3, or bottom 10, or worst, bottom 3).
Building strength through cardio classes is near impossible, and using the free weight is intimidating.
People usually push themselves too hard in a cycling class and never come back.
Some members are looking for a multi week challenge or program.
A cycling class always feel the same
How expensive is it to solve?
Creating a scientific strength or endurance plan can take several hours of research and the amount of available information is overwhelming.
Users can buy a program or hire a personal trainer, but they find that isn't for them.
Determining strength or endurance progress requires tools and scientific knowledge most people do not have
Buying a bike with a power meter is costly and there is not many places to ride at intense paces.
What are the current solutions?
Pursuit cycling experience
Regular Cycling class
Riding outside
Lifting weights
What unique insights do I have on the problem?
Members who do regular cycling and go more than 1 per week have a system of setting goals. They have target "power" they are trying to achieve on average, and will work to maintain that work load through the class. This gives them targets to know what to aim for during class, and afterwards, to know if they performed enough work.
Members who have tried the Pursuit cycling game once and never again are turned off due to the competitive nature, and how exposed their inabilities are. They prefer not to compete and lose, especially in the open. In addition, the workout pushes people to their limits (people have been known to throw up) due to the competition pushing people to 'go all out'.
Member who are about to quit, and check-in during group fitness class times, tend to not use group fitness classes. They do not use it because there isn't a class for them, or they are fully booked. But, members who don't quit, use the club more often and use group fitness classes. Summary: use the club more, you are less likely to quit.
